What Is the Ideal Workbench Height?

Practical MakeGauge guide · Built to complement the related calculator.

There is no single perfect workbench height. The best height depends on your body, the tasks you perform and the tools you use. A joinery bench optimized for hand work can feel too high for heavy power-tool tasks, while a low bench may force unnecessary bending during detail work.

Start with your working posture

A useful starting method is to stand naturally and note the height of your hand/thumb-knuckle area. The current MakeGauge calculator treats that measurement as a reference, then adjusts it slightly for hand-focused or power-tool-focused work.

Hand work

For hand-planing, chiseling and other tasks where you want control, a somewhat lower working surface can be comfortable. More leverage is often available when the work is below elbow height.

Power-tool work

For sanding, assembly and other lighter tasks, a somewhat higher surface can reduce bending. Exact needs vary with the tool, the workpiece and your stance.

Test before you build

Before committing to a permanent bench, stack scrap material or use a temporary platform to simulate a few heights. Work for several minutes in the positions you expect to use most. Comfort and control are better indicators than a universal number.

Use the calculator

Try the Workbench Height Calculator for a starting range. Then adjust it to your shop, your body and the projects you actually build.
