Workbench Dimensions Guide: Height, Depth and Length
Workbench dimensions are a compromise between usable surface area and the amount of room you can actually spare. A giant bench can be wonderful to work on but frustrating in a cramped shop.
Height
Choose height around the tasks you perform most. Use the workbench height guide and test temporary setups before fixing the final dimension.
Depth
Depth controls how far you have to reach. A deeper bench gives you more room for assemblies and tools, but very deep surfaces can become awkward to reach across. For many home shops, keeping the main working area within a comfortable reach is more important than maximizing square footage.
Length
Length should follow your projects and wall space. Longer benches are useful for cabinets, furniture and assembly, while shorter benches are easier to fit into garages and multi-use rooms.
Storage and overhang
Account for vises, clamps, shelves, drawer clearance and door swings before fixing the footprint. A few inches of edge overhang can matter if you plan to clamp to the bench.
